New Belgian identity card with fingerprints

New Belgian identity card with fingerprints

In force since 2021

According to the European regulations, all identity cards issued by the EU Member States must contain the fingerprints of 2 (index) fingers by mid-2021 at the latest. All Belgian municipalities have already switched to new identity cards with fingerprints by the end of 2020. In the coming weeks, all Belgian professional consulates will follow suit. As of Monday 21 June 2021, to obtain an electronic identity card (e-ID) or Kids-ID (if your child is 6 years old or older) you will have to come in person, by appointment, to the consulate general of Belgium where you are registered .

This is necessary to ensure proper identification and a similar photograph (taken on the spot) and to take your fingerprints (from the age of 12), as is already required for a passport. You can already make an appointment for an identity card with fingerprints at your professional counsellor's office from 31 May 2021. We are aware that the application for an identity card will require more effort from you. But this is the only way we can maintain the international recognition of the Belgian identity card (in over 50 countries).
