Non-resident
To be registered as a non-resident, you need an NIE number(Número de Identidad de Extranjero). This unique identification number is mandatory for foreigners with economic, professional or social interests in Spain.
Resident
A resident in Spain is someone who has his main residence or domicile in Spain. In doing so, we distinguish between two forms of residency:
- Tax residency - determines where you are taxable.
- Administrative/legal residency - deals with your official registration and residency documents.
In practice, both usually go hand in hand and together determine your rights and obligations as a resident of Spain.
You will stay more than 183 days + 1 day in Spain and therefore the Spanish tax authorities will consider you as tax resident. The Spanish tax authorities expect you to do your tax declaration in Spain and whether or not you will be taxed on your world income.
When you decide that Spain will become your country of residence, your personal records will now go through the embassy or consulate of your nationality.
Your Spanish records will be handled directly with the Spanish government authorities.
